SALKANTAY MOUNTAIN TREK
5 days / 4 nights

This trek is a remote and ancient footpath in the same region as the Inca trail to Machupicchu, but less crowded and offering more spectacular views. This route provides a magnificent wilderness alternative for those who want to escape the more congested trekking routes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On the trail, we pass through an amazing secuence of ecological zones, from sparsely vegetated alpine meadows flanking two spectacular snow peaks, down through a subtropical cloud forest, we arrive to Machupicchu.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 : CUSCO (3400 m.) - MOLLEPATA - SORAYPAMPA

We pick you up from your hotel and travel by private Bus to Mollepata village (begining of the trail). This village is located along a shore cut by the main road Cusco – Abancay.

We start our hike and meet our arrieros “horsemen” and cook who help us to make easy our hike. we hike up enjoying the diversity of the flora and fauna at this altitude. Then we stop to enjoy our delicious lunch at Chuñuna which is a quiet spot.
In the afternoon after 3 hours hike we arrive to our first campsite Soraypampa (3,800 m). Overnight.


DAY 2 :  SORAY PAMPA - 7 SNAKES PASS - CHAULLAY

After a good breakfast, we leave Soraypampa, this is the hardest day because we have to climb to the 7 snakes Pass (4,600 m.) the highest point of our trip to MACHU PICCHU, from where we enjoy an spectacular view of the high snow peak called Salkantay (6,271 m) and great views of Humantay and Huayanay mountains and small lakes and morraines too. Later we hike downhill to CHAULLAY. Overnight.

DAY 3 : CHAULLAY - LA PLAYA

After and early breakfast we continue our day hiking until Wiñay Poqo where we have lunch.
Hiking down hill is pretty easy and here we get into the sub tropical forest where we can see coca, coffee and several native fruits plantations. In the afternoon we hike down hill to get LA PLAYA village. Overnight.

DAY 4 : LA PLAYA - AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN

From La Playa we take a local transport for 20 minutes to Lucma (hike if local transport is not available), from here we start our climb for 3 hours to Llactapata (recently discovered Inca Site) which is famous for a “great condor view of Machu Picchu”. We enjoy a picnic lunch. Then we hike down hill to the Hydroelectric Station where we take the local train to Aguas Calientes (45 minutes). Overnight. Optional Hot Springs ($3.5)
 
DAY 5 : AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN - MACHUPICCHU - CUSCO

Early Breakfast. We leave early by bus to visit Machu Picchu and to enjoy the sunrise and optional climbing to the mountain of Huaynapicchu.
A guided tour of 3 hours, and then you have  free time to explore by yourself (optional the temple of the moon which is located behind Huayna Picchu Mountain and the Inca bridge).
The guide will tell you the time for the meeting at the train station to take the train back to Cusco. Transfer to Your Hotel.

 

PRIVATE SERVICE

A private service trek is organized just for you with private transport and your own personal tour guide. We do not add other people to your group, in order to provide you the best service possible with personal attention and added comfort.

INCLUDES:
Hotel collection and private bus to the village of Mollepata (begining of the trek). Professional bilingual tour guide. High-quality camping equipment (4 person tents used just for 2 persons, mattress, dining tent, kitchen tent), cooking equipment.
Plentiful meals, vegetarian option (morning tea, breakfast, snacks, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner every daily). Food includes: pancakes, omelets, soups, fresh fruit, avocado, pasta, chicken, fish, meat, rice, all rich in carbohydrates and suitable for trekking and hot drinks. Boiled water is also provided to fill up your water bottles. Horsemen, pack animals (horses and mules to carry your personal items and camping gear, saddled horses just for the first 2 days). Good cook. First aid kit & oxygen bottle. Accomodation in Aguas Calientes. Tourist bus roundtrip to Machupicchu. Entrance fee to Machupicchu. Train ticket back to Cusco. Transfer from the train station to your hotel.

EXCLUDES:
Breakfast on the first morning. Last lunch in Aguas Calientes town. Entrance to the thermal springs ($3.5) and sleeping bag (you can hire it in our office US$ 15 for the whole trail).

TREK OPTIONS

(1) Horse for personal use or saddle horse.- US$60 for the whole trip.
(2) Vegetarian meals.- We can provide vegetarian meals or special diets with no extra cost. Just let us know at least 2 days prior to trek departure.
(3) Sleeping bag rental.- We have sleeping bags in our office for rent.
