Picchu in the
distance. This trail is sometimes referred to as the royal road to the sacred city of Machu Picchu. The trail begins at Kilometer 104, and involves a 4-hour scenic hike to the archaeological site of Wiñaywuayna. After lunch we will continue walking up to get the Sun gate or Intipunku from where we will have the first glimpse of Machupicchu, later we will walk down to Machu Picchu, where we will have the chance to enjoy the sunset Then we will take the bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes where we will spend night. Next day You'll have a guided tour of the ruins and plenty of free time to explore the site before taking the train back to Cusco DAY
1 : CUSCO / KM104 / WIÑAYHUAYNA /
MACHUPICCHU / AGUAS CALIENTES We
pick you up from your hotel between 05:45 and 6:15 and take you to the
train station for the three and a half hour train journey to the
begining of the Inca trail hike at km 104. We cross the bridge over the
Urubamba River to the checkpoint, where the trail heads off to the right
towards the ruins of Chachabamba. These ruins, discovered in 1940, are
located on the old Inca road along the southern bank of the Urubamba
River. The style of the buildings and stonework suggests that this was
an important religious site, as well as having a secondary function as a
gatehouse guarding this entrance to Machu Picchu. On the way we will
pass trough an small stream. The path then turns west and continues
uphill leaving the forest. After
about 2 hours hiking through the mountainside we'll reach a beautiful
waterfall, and soon we arrive at the bottom of the superb ruins of Wiñay
Wayna, where we will have
our lunch (optional lunch box) We
will leave Wiñay Wayna after lunch to get to Machu Picchu before sunset.
The trail follows the mountainside and drops into the cloud forest
before coming to an almost vertical flight of 50 steps leading up to the
final pass called Intipunku (Sun Gate). Suddenly the whole of Machu
Picchu is spread out before you in all its glory. Then we will hike down
to the ruins. You'll
have some free time to enjoy the sunset and take photos of Machu Picchu
from the classic viewpoint. Later
we will take the bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes where we will
spend the night. DAY
2 : MACHUPICCHU / CUSCO We
will take the first bus up to Machupicchu to enjoy the sunrise. The
guide will take you on a
guided tour of all the major sectors of the ruins, which takes about 2
hours. After the tour you will have free time to explore Machupicchu by
yourself. Before taking the train back to Cusco, you can have lunch just
outside the ruins or take a bus down to Aguas Calientes town, where
there are plenty of restaurants. The
guide will tell you what time you should meet at the train station to
take the train back to Cusco. GROUP
